As I pushed my laden hands toward the ceiling, small metal flakes fell into my eyes. “Arrggg! Not a gain!” I wailed. I clumsily dropped the grey steel dumbbells to the ground and rubbed my red eyes.
What did I learn from this experience? Never, never, never buy cheap exercise equipment. I had ditched Gold’s Gym because of their poor customer service & broken down equipment, and instead planned to create my own small home gym. I decided to purchase a set of the cheaper all-steel dumbbells, but quickly realized my mistake.
I learned that the hex-shaped dumbbells that aren’t coated with rubber tend to flake and fall apart. You know…the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics! And when metal flakes fall from above your face, the law of gravity suggests that the metal will fall into your open eyes. So I returned the cruddy weights and went on a hunt to find some good quality dumbbells. In my research I quickly discovered that the highest rated dumbbells were made by CAP. I instantly fell in love with their rubber-coated hex dumbbells. Not only did the rubber coating keep me from going blind, but it also saved my floor from damage, on the occasions when I had to drop the weights.
The Ergo contoured chrome handles really help to reduce fatigue and allow me to put more energy into lifting the weights. That translates into stronger muscles!
As with all steel products these days, these aren’t very inexpensive. But if you’re set on exercising at home like I am, definitely learn from my mistake and only buy quality equipment right off the bat. Maybe you can start off with buying a couple lighter weights to try them out, and if you like them as much as I do, you can buy a whole range of weights. I got each of the following weights for my home gym: 5 lbs, 10 lbs, 15 lbs, 20 lbs, 25 lbs, 30 lbs, 35 lbs, 40 lbs, 45 lbs, 50 lbs, 55 lbs, 60 lbs, 65 lbs, and 70 lbs. Sure that sounds expensive, but in the long run you’ll save a lot of money in gym fees. And ladies, my wife loves these just as much as I do!
Right now it looks like Amazon actually has them cheaper than what I paid. Click the links below:
