LED Lantern

LED lights are one of the truly revolutionary products of the past decade. Not only do they make flashlights so much brighter, but they last many times longer – thus saving us money! I purchased this Energizer® Folding Area Lantern nearly a year ago for my emergency kit, and have used it many times (camping, power outages, car maintenance, etc.) and still haven’t had to replace the batteries! This product is definitely worth bragging about.

The original packaging claimed that the light would run on a single set of batteries for an astounding 30 hours. At first I was skeptical, but I couldn’t pass up testing a claim like that. I was hoping to prove the claim wrong, but I actually think it has lasted longer than 30 hours on the brightest setting! The light folds out to reveal a handy mirror, which is great for camping and for magnifying the light output. I also love the different light modes (high, low, & nightlight). Here are some of the manufacturer’s features:

  • 8 Bright Nichia LED’s deliver ~ 112 lumens
  • Folds out for 360º degree area light
  • 3 Mode slide switch – High,Low & Nightlight
  • Runs on 4 D batteries
  • Carrying Handle
  • Lifetime guarantee

As always, if you know of something better, please let me know! (even better, send me one & I’ll test it out :)) Click below to find this lantern on Amazon:

  1. 1

Admittedly, LED lanterns and other electric lanterns are quick and easy to turn on and off and do not consume our ever-valuable oxygen; thus for moderate camping and in-tent use, they are the preferred option. Battery powered types, however, can’t hold a candle to the light of a gas powered lantern. Yes, that’s right, the good old fashioned lantern that burns those little tea bags some people call “mantles” into blinding flares provides more light than 5 or 10 of these techie gadgets, and costs only about $10 more for a basic two mantle propane lantern (see Cabela’s.com). Note: do not attempt to back your car over the lantern because it may break as my wife discovered one camper’s eve (no one was injured and no ensuing conflagration occurred).
