I love hotels! That’s why I’m very excited to give away a free night stay to one of America’s top historic luxury hotels, the Hotel Roanoke in Virginia. Please scroll to the bottom for the giveaway details.

The moment I walked through the large front doors, I was struck by the hotel’s unique mixture of old southern art & architecture with stylish modern décor & furniture. Some places try to do it, but the Hotel Roanoke has succeeded.

True Southern hospitality seems to be a lost art these days, but this hotel staff has definitely been trained by professionals. Smartly dressed bellmen greet you with a smile at the front door, and freshly baked chocolate chip cookies welcome every guest at the reception desk!

I was very pleased with the comfort of the beds and the cleanliness and layout of the guest rooms. My family was able to stay in two adjoining suites, and they were both top notch.

My boys also enjoyed the beds!

I happen to really like architecture and interior design, so I was thrilled to see that around every corner was a unique piece of beautifully crafted furniture. It appears that all of the furniture is covered with nice thick upholstery. After a long day, our rooms were a breath of fresh air.

Mmmm…warm cookies!

My two-year-old son Joseph was in awe when I pulled his Murphy bed from the wall!

The bathrooms were all spotless and everything was well-stocked and fully functioning.

A goofy shot of me hard at “work”.

I was very impressed by all of the little custom designs that are characteristic of the Hotel Roanoke.

Both of my boys were very comfortable in their beds!

The hotel is just a short walk from the many downtown shops, restaurants, and museums. My family especially loves the nearby Virginia Museum of Transportation and the O. Winston Link museum (famous train photographer of the 1950′s).

You really should take a walk around the hotel to see all of the historical memorabilia and decorations. Shoot, they even have customized Coke Machines!

Most higher-end hotels (like this) haven’t yet introduced free Wi-Fi internet in the rooms ($10/day), but you can get a free wireless connection in the lobby.

This may sound strange, but I really loved the upholstery on these chairs. It shows the quality of The Hotel Roanoke.

You’ll find many quiet lobbies if you need to get some work done. In the back of this photo you can see the doors of one of the many conference rooms. I found it interesting that the hotel has 63,000 square feet of conference rooms/ball rooms. This hotel is also one of the top locations in the area for weddings & wedding receptions. The catering is exceptional! I should know…6 years ago my wife and I had one of our wedding reception here! Click here for photos of Hotel Roanoke weddings.

In addition to the hotel’s catering, it has one of the nicest and oldest restaurants in the Roanoke area. The Regency Room opened in 1938 and has maintained a high standard of culinary excellence. This giveaway includes breakfast for 2 at The Regency Room! Because I love locally grown fresh food, I found this paragraph from the restaurant’s website very appealing:
“The restaurant, under the direction of Executive Chef Billie Raper, features continental cuisine and is open year-round, including holidays. The Regency Room is extensively involved in a shop local, buy local mentality, working with a Floyd County cooperative called Good Food, Good People, which helps business owners to purchase produce from area farmers. The foods are picked to order and delivered within 24 hours. Chef Raper has worked with local growers for more than six years, purchasing mostly locally grown fruits and vegetables and also buys lamb from Border Springs Farm in Patrick County.”

The breakfast and lunch buffets are my favorites because I get to try a wide range of fine cuisine at a fairly reasonable price.

Even the elevators have class!

It turns out that my little boys made it through the night…tough work testing out a nice hotel, huh?

Wake up!

If you have an appreciation for fine craftsmanship, the Hotel Roanoke will feel like a trip to your favorite museum.

If you want to get away from your room and read a good book, you’ll find many quiet fireplaces around the hotel.

You’ve gotta watch for all the small details

If you’re an art lover, you’ll appreciate the hundreds of original art pieces that dot the walls of the hotel. I really love how the art focuses on the culture of the Old South.

Please share your comments below & let me know what you think of the Hotel Roanoke!

I think all the different suite options are great. They are able to accomodate so many different needs, a sure sign of a high class hotel.
Your pictures are wonderful, they highlight the hotel beautifully! Thanks for the review Josh.
I love Hotetl Roanoke, The rooms a equisite. The bulding design incedibel. When they were selling furniture back in 1989, my parents bought some. It is cool to look around the house and see a part of history. Great review Josh. You have a flair for writing.

So I visited the site. Is it silly that I love that it says (here http://hotelroanoke.com/accommodations/guest-rooms.php) they have Neutrogena in the bathrooms? I’m a big fan of Neutrogena.
No, that’s not silly Alysa…I noticed it too! It’s the little details that catch my attention & shows that a hotel is willing to go the extra mile.

thanks for the fun giveaway!
I love the city of Roanoke. It is where my dad lived. At the time of his passing, I flew in from WI and my sister and brother-in-law came down from northern VA. They stayed at The Hotel Roanoke. Even though I was in Roanoke that time under devastating circumstances, I can attest to the pure beauty and richness of The Hotel Roanoke. For me to be able to stay there would be wonderful. I would be able to see not only my sister and brother-in-law again, but I would get to meet my nephew who is turning one on April 5th. I would also get to see my other sister who lives in Roanoke. What a wonderful prize this is.

What I love most about The Hotel Roanoke is the historic aspect of it. Although it is modern, amenity-wise, there is a rich historic feel about the hotel. You see it just looking at the facade of the building.

http://hotelroanoke.com/about/index.php I love the Hotel Roanoke and have always wanted to stay there since I was a very little girl. When I was in elementary school we toured the historic places in Roanoke and of course we toured the HR. We also had lunch there. I thought I was all that getting to eat in such a fancy place! I love the beauty and elegance not to mention the history!
Thanks for your comment Lori! Be sure to complete the optional entries to increase your odds of winning!

As the Director of a Homeless Men’s Shelter the chances of me and my wife ever getting the luxury of staying at the Hotel Roanoke is slim to none, but it is nice to dream. This hotel to me is just a gorgeous display of beauty in the City of Roanoke. The English Tudor design is wonderful in this beautiful mountain back drop setting. The architecture and the attention to every detail seems like it would make this hotel an excellent back drop to a movie production. Josh has captured much of the splendor of this amazing place. I think that those beds and those fireplaces declare in a cozy way that “sweet dreams” are just a few clicks away.
I was impressed by your photos and description… I especially liked the hide-a-bed.
Anyway, as allergy season has kicked in for me, I have to say I like the idea of their pure allergy-free guest rooms. http://hotelroanoke.com/purerooms.php

Hey Josh, I just loved the pictures of Hotel Roanoke. When I was in school for at Roanoke Catholic in grades 7-10 one of my friend’s Dad was the manager there and they lived on the fifth floor. N&W had some offices on the first level on the back side and my Dad worked there. I spent a lot of time there with my friend. We got to roam thru the kitchens and steal eclairs off of the carts. Hang out with the current Miss Virginia at the pool. (They used to stay there during their reign) There used to be portraits of each of them down one of the hallways. There also used to be a pool where the convention center is now. The magnolia trees outside the hotel always impressed me.
One thing you have to mention whenever talking about Hotel Roanoke is their Peanut Soup. They have fixed it there since the Hotel opened. I hope you got to try it out!!
It is a beautiful place in a beautiful city!
Hi Sandy,
Those sound like great memories! Yes, I’ve tried the Regency Room’s Peanut Soup. Keep your fun comments coming!
