External Hard Drives: large capacity

Finding the perfect hard drive has been a rather difficult task. I’ve purchased 4 or 5 to date. However, last year I found one worth telling you about!

For me there were two different types of hard drives that I was interested in buying:

1. A very portable and rugged drive

2. A drive with a huge storage capacity

This review will focus on my favorite large capacity drive. Click here for the review on portable and rugged drives.

After hours of research I finally decided to buy the following:

Seagate FreeAgent XTreme 1TB External Drive:

This stay-at-home external drive also showed extremely high reviews everywhere I looked. After purchasing it I was very pleased with the performance, speed, and especially the backup software which made automatic incremental backups. Every day my most-recently-changed files were safely backed up!

My Pros:

(a) I love the huge 1 TB capacity

(b) I love how I am able to have the drive automatically backup my files incrementally (just backs up what you’ve changed since last time)

(c) I love the FireWire port which allows for faster file transfer

My Cons:

(a) My only con popped up a few weeks ago. For some strange reason the backup software stopped reading that my drive is connected, even though I was able to access the drive through “My Computer.” I know a fair amount about computers, but am not a wiz, so it was a great inconvenience for me.  However, I finally realized that the software update created the problem, so I went into the software setup file and did a reinstall, which didn’t remove my current backup settings. So all is well with the world now!

As always, if you know of something better, please let me know!

Good to know! I need a good hard drive for all my photos, I think you can relate. It is a hard thing to swallow knowing that all my trips in Europe are mere memories because all my photos were on a hard drive that crashed. How much does something like this cost?

The prices of 1 Terabite external hard drives has really dropped. You shouldn’t have to pay over $100. Even 2 TB hard drives are affordable now. You’ll pay a bit more for portable hard drives, like my favorite Lacie Rugged. Check out my review at this link: http://joshlovesit.com/?p=207

I have bought a few Western Digital ones (500 GB – 1TB) and also a few Lacie ones (same size). I have had better luck with the Lacie brand. The WD hard drives seem to do stuff like you mention in your post. All of a sudden stop being read or hard to open or eject. The Lacie ones are usually a few dollars more, but I think it is probably worth it. Here is the most recent one that I bought, and really like: LaCie Hard Disk 1TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive designed by Neil Poulton 301304U (Amazon for $70)

Thanks for your comment Jake. Yes, I have also had some bad luck with Western Digital. I’ll check out the LaCie hard drive. How did you decide to buy this hard drive?
