How to Modify Bisquick to get the World’s Best Waffles

Don’t tell my mom, but I found a way to modify Bisquick waffle mix in a way that actually tastes better than her homemade waffle recipe.

© Joshua T. Farnsworth

I was amazed! That’s a big deal, because her recipe involves the time-consuming beating of egg whites & other laborious steps.

Bisquick was always just background as I pushed my shopping cart through the supermarket. If I ever purchased pancake/waffle mix, it was always the cheapest product I could find. But then my wife decided to try Bisquick in our waffle iron. After a few modifications, these waffles are now one of our favorite meals! The flavor is so amazing that you can even eat these puppies with just butter…of course, gallons of syrup can’t hurt either. We have yet to make the biscuit recipe, but it sounds very good.

I’ve found that the recipe from the back of the box can be modified to improve the waffles. Here’s my revision:

Waffle Recipe Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of Bisquick Waffle Mix
  • 2 cups of milk (instead of 1-1/3 like the box  calls for)
  • 2 tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 1 egg

Waffle Recipe Directions:

  • Whisk ingredients together and pour over a buttered waffle iron

We recently discovered (and purchased) this awesome double-sided waffle maker!! Come on! Two waffles at a time? Outrageous! It saves so much time:

Definitely going to try this! I usually use Krustaez mix, which I think is really good but I think these look really good! If you haven’t tryed Krustaez mixes they are excellent! Especially the crumb cake. They are great if in a pinch and don’t have time for homemade.

After trying this recipe, you won’t ever go back to Krusteez! Come back here & comment after you’ve made it & let me know how you liked it.

I am going to try this…with canola oil of course (healthier than vegetable oil) and the “heart healthy version of Bisquick…I’ll tell you how it comes out.

I’m excited that you’re going to try a healthier version of this! Please come back here & reply to this comment once you’ve tried it, with a link to your blog post.

Waffles are so easy from scratch, I would never use a mix. Takes up too much room in the pantry and it is too hard to tailor the results. If you haven’t tried scratch, I definitely recommend it.

    • 8

Thanks for your comment. I have definitely tried waffles from scratch, but these are so good and extremely fast, that they’re hard to beat.

  4. 9

This sounds so good. I have all the ingredients too. Guess what’s for breakfast in the morning? !

  5. 11

Tried your recipe this morning, but used the Master Mix for Bisquick since I did not have any Bisquick in the house. Waffles were wonderfully light & very good. I also added about a tablespoon of sugar to the mix & a tsp of vanilla flavoring.

  6. 13

Josh, so glad I found your recipe! This is SO easy and the resulting waffles are delicious! They were served to all of our visiting family and everyone raved about them. Compared to some of the other recipes, yours is fast and simple to make with much better waffles. I did add a shake of cinnamon and a tsp of vanilla because we love those flavors but even without that, these were great. Thanks so much for sharing a recipe I will be keeping and using often 🙂

  7. 15

I’m telling mom j/k I’ll try this – like that you modified it from the box. I bet it adds more flavor….

  8. 16

Just letting you know that I linked to your recipe on a page I wrote about National Waffle Day.

  9. 18

This is the same recipe as on the back of the box, unless I’m missing something? I find this is too dry for waffles…any suggestions? Thanks!!

  10. 19

Oh sorry I didn’t see the milk instead of water! Does this help with the dryness? Thanks!!

    • 20

      Hi Amanda,

The milk seems to give a more creamy flavor. Thanks for asking! (P.S. Sorry for the late reply to your comment..for some reason, these comments haven’t been emailed to me lately).

  11. 21

These are great! I add a bit of sugar and vanilla in the batter so that it has a sweeter taste, because that is what I like. But thanks for posting this! It helped me a lot, being the fact that the bisquick I have doesn’t have a waffle recipe.

    Michelle says:

I made these today, but I make my own ‘bisquick’ from scratch using
    This recipe

I used coconut oil, coconut milk, added some stevia and
Vanilla. It needed extra sweetness for sure. But overall they turned out

  13. 24

Sorr but flavor was ok but not crunchy at all. What did I do wrong?

    • 25

Hi Nancy, did you allow your waffle iron to heat up sufficiently? Also, are you able to adjust the settings to make your waffles more crispy? Leave them in a bit longer.

  14. 26

This is the EXaCT recipe on the box, milk and all. Am I missing something here?

  15. 28

I have always made my waffles from scratch. I was very apprehensive to try this but was in a bit of a hurry and thought I would give it a try.
I have to say that i don’t think i will ever go back to making from scratch.
Waffles were so light & fluffy as well as extremely flavorful.
    Thanks for the recipe!

This sounds very easy and very good. I just have 2 questions (since I don’t have my box of Bisquick at hand), 1) how many waffles does this make?, and 2) you list the first ingredient as “Bisquick Waffle Mix.” Is this something different than the standard Bisquick I keep in my pantry? Thanks for sharing your recipe, I love how easy Bisquick makes some of my recipes, and our kids have been begging us to get a waffle maker for nearly a year now. As of today the waffle maker (not Belgian, we’re a traditional waffle family – would this affect the recipe at all?) is in the mail. So, I’m gearing up for a waffle feast, hence my search for the perfect recipe 🙂 -Thanks

  17. 32

Omg. I heated my Belgian waffle maker up first. Once hot added 1 tb of butter cutting it up so it would evenly melt on the griddle. Once bubbling add the mix just as described in the recipe. Let it cook good. I have a maker that flips for great heating. Oooooommmmmmgggg. My daughter and I are smashing!!!! They’re fluffy and crispy. Absolutely wonderful. Restaurants quality if u can take them out when still golden.

Hi Taryn, sorry for my delayed response, but thanks for your comment! I’m so happy that you have enjoyed the waffles!

      Kristin says:

@Taryn, Do you mind sharing the type of waffle iron you have. Just purchased the flip kind from Hamilton Beach and we are so disappointed. Waffles just don’t get crispy on the outside even when I leave them in longer (much longer).

  18. 35

I found your recipe this morning and made up a double batch. They were great! I doubled the recipe and they came out perfectly. Thanks!

    Mary Man says:

Hi I have a quick question hopefully you will see this… I am making waffles with my family tonight using the recipe and I was wondering how liquidy the batter should me? I feel like with all the milk it is too thing but maybe it is just me?

    • 38

Hi Mary, the batter doesn’t need to be thick. Just try it out, and if they don’t turn out nice, then just add a tad more dry mix. Thanks for your question!

  20. 39

Yummy! These do look good. I love the convenience of mixes, but it’s nice when you can give it that homemade touch with a little extra something. A bit of vanilla might be good too.

  21. 40

Add a little Lemon Juice in the measuring cup, add milk and let sit a minute…gives a Buttermilk flavor.

  22. 42

Add a tsp of vanilla and a couple shakes of cinnamon! Mmm best waffles ever made

  23. 44

This was better than the Krusteaz Belgium Waffle mix. Much lighter and a nice crisp on the outside. I’m glad walmart ran out so I had to find a bisquick recipe. Thanks!

  24. 46

Thank you!!!! What a perfect waffle!!! The unmodified version is sooooooo heavy! My daughter loves these as do my husband and I! We now have waffle and wine parties…lol

  25. 48

I love your base of this recipe by using Bisquick! Adding/modifying a few ingredients (coconut oil, instead of vegatable, cornstarch, baking powder, vanilla & sugar), I was able to create a Mega Crispy & Slightly Sweet Belgium Waffle that was proud to be topped with fresh cream, strawberries & maple syrup. Yum!!! Thank you, Josh

    Hugh Janus says:

Try adding 1 tablespoon of salt, 2 tablespoons of sugar, 2 teaspoons of baking soda, 3 tablespoons of butter and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract! Adds even more flavor and fluffiness.

    Richard carrillo says:

Just tried these added a tablespoon sugar and tsp vanilla. Fluffy and sweet topped off with nutella and bananas with a little whipped cream. awesome recipe always used the normal 1 1/3 cup milk.

When I make pancakes I use 1 cup Bisquick,1 cup milk,1 egg, tablespoon sugar and tsp vanilla.

  28. 54

fail fail fail this recipe failed

  29. 56

    Add a little cinnamon

    John O'Malleren says:

If you want the best waffles ever, add a couple ounces of irish whiskey to the mix. The heat will cook out the alcohol and leave behind a hickory smoke flavor. Slan.

    Ron Robertson says:

Add almond extract to the batter. *MIND BLOWN*

  32. 60

These look good but I think you hit on something in the beginning that is key.. Whenever I make waffles regardless of whether it’s from scratch or out of a box I let it sit for a hour or so to thicken. I find the batter is thicker and the waffles are so much fluffier. I also let mine sit in the waffle iron about 45 seconds after the indicator says they are done because they become a bit crispier but that is just my personal preference. Thanks for sharing your modified recipe. I will definitely try it.

  33. 61

Phenomenal recipe! Thank you! Everybody at our house loves it!

  34. 62

I tried these this morning for my 2 boys and husband. LOVE them! SO much better – the crunchiest on the outside that I’ve been able to make and so fluffy on the inside. Thank you!!!

  35. 63

Oh my word. I am not a waffle fan. But I made these for my grandkids and they are awesome. I love the slightly crispy outside and the soft middle. I added a tablespoon of sugar as some suggested. I also let the batter sit for about an hour before cooking, then let them cook an extra 45 seconds as someone else had suggested. Thank you for this recipe!

    Claire greene says:

First. These are amazing. For real. I have tried so many recipes and the best I got was pretty good but…. im a pretty skeptical person and have tried so many recipesand this seemed just another minor variation. Nor so! Just do it. Great taste, cooks beautifully, crisp and light while also managing to be fluffy and filling. I almost never leave reviews. I just never remember later. But this was so good and my whole family raved (unusual for a 16 yo boy and 13 yo girl who are soo over it) that I took the time after dinner to come back and leave a review. I keep shaking my head in wonder that such a small adjustment and premade mix could make that! Thanks!!!

  37. 65

Isn’t this the same recipe that bisquck now provides? &5 is on my box!

  38. 66

Just came across your recipe. I did add vanilla and a bit of sugar. I accidently found by not pouring enough batter iny Belgium waffle iron that it made crispy waffles. Tasted just like a sweet, crispy funnel cake without the grease!
